New Year's Day, 2009
HAPPY NEW YEAR from beautiful Hilton Head Island, SC !
More bicycling on the beach, even though it's a bit more blustery than yesterday !

Does Michael conduct even when he is bicycling on the beach ? (tee-hee)

Sally snapped this photo of Lynne & Michael on a walk - watch out for those alligators!

Yet another stunning Hilton Head sunset at the end of a picture-perfect week !

Hilton Head Island
Auld Lang Syne, 2008

Au revoir, 2008 . . .
you had your ups & downs, but overall, a very fine year !

And what a wonderful last night of 2008 we had . . .

Te Deum
by Charles Reznikoff
Not because of victories

I sing,

having none,

but for the common sunshine,

the breeze,

the largesse of the spring.

Not for victory

but for the day's work done

as well as I was able;

not for a seat upon the dais

but at the common table.

Our delightful evening of mirth & fellowship began with scrumptuous appetizers and lovely wines !

Additionally, Sally kept Phyllis & Lynne mesmerized with a poignant selection of children's literature with deeply moving storylines, while Michael was cooking his magnificent New Year's Eve Feast !

The New Year's Eve Dinner is served buffet-style off the bar . . . YUM !

Lynne & Phyllis, moments before grace . . .

Sally's seat is empty because she's snapping this photo of Michael, Lynne, & Phyllis enjoying the elegant New Year's Eve Dinner . . .

Adieu, 2008, mon ami . . .

We were too busy toasting to take photos of the ushering out of 2008 and the welcoming in of 2009 . . .

A New Year's toast to love and laughter

and happily ever after

A health to you, a wealth to you,

And the best that life can give to you.

Dance as if no one were watching,

Sing as if no one were listening,

And live every day as if it were your last.

We've holidays and happy days,

and memory days galore

And when we've toasted every one,

I offer just one more

So let us lift our glasses high,

and drink a silent toast

To the day, deep buried in each heart

that each one loves the most !

We did sing Auld Lang Syne with good friends !
(even though "auld friends," Jim & Jean, were in Colorado Springs !)

Eighteenth-century Scottish poet, Robert Burns, may well be most famous not for a poem he wrote, exactly, but for a poem he wrote down.

Often described as "the song that nobody knows", Auld Lang Syne annually rings in the New Year at parties across the world, though most often sung out of tune and with improvised lyrics.

Though the history of the authorship of the poem is labyrinthine and disputed, Burns is generally credited with penning at least two original stanzas to the version that is most familiar to revelers of the New Year.

Here are the first two stanzas as Burns recorded them:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind ?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And days of auld lang syne !

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

Willkommen !

Bienvenue !

Aloha !

Hilton Head Island
A spectacular day at the beach !

Our friends - Lynne & Phyllis - were able to fly down from Rhode Island to spend part of the week with us and a great time was had by all !

This was one of the truly most spectacular days at the beach !

The dolphins were really putting on a show - even jumping out of the water ! It was absolutely breathtaking to watch ! ! ! !

Unfortunately, I'm not a good enough photographer to capture any of the dolphins, but I was able to snap this shot of Sally, Lynne & Phyllis enjoying their time at the beach . . .

Here's the Beach Club at Shipyard Plantation . . .

You were warned about my photography skills ! Here are Sally, Lynne & Phyllis hamming it up on a bench at the Beach Club, but you can't even see them . . . oh well ! At least you can see how gorgeous the weather was on the island !

Sally snapped this breathtaking sunset on the beach . . .

Hilton Head Island
Yes, that's an alligator !

We saw alligators every day, so Sally had to hop out of the van and snap this quick photo of one sunning near one of the greens on the golf course !

Even though the house was just beautiful when we arrived, Sally was able to transform it into an even more wonderful, festive atmosphere with decorations she brought from home !

Here is a sample of how gorgeous the dining room was daily . . .

It goes without saying, the Maestro was in heaven in his well-appointed kitchen, complete with marble countertops ! Who knows why Sally took this photo by turning the camera, but I have no clue how to rotate it on this blog so what you see is what you get. (help, Richie !)

Sally noshing in the spacious, beautiful living room after a "hard" day at the beach !

The enormous Master Bedroom had an equally enormous Master Bathroom !

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina . . . 12.28.8 - 1.4.9
Out with the old, in with the new !

It was bright sunshine and 86 degrees when we arrived for our week on Hilton Head Island (HHI) this afternoon !

We'll enjoy the waning days of 2008 and then ring in the wonderful New Year . . . 2009 !

Later Sunday evening - after we unloaded the van & got moved in - Michael took a few photos of our beautiful, 3-bedroom "cottage" in Shipyard Plantation.

Here it is from the front.

And another angle from the front . . .

. . . the deck off the living room and dining room

. . . the pool & spa is in the back yard !

Hope the rest of the week is as beautiful as today was !
